This study explores the development of critical writing among 9th-grade students in the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) at Nueva York School, focusing on tensions between inquiry-based pedagogy and formal assessment. It examines conceptions of critical writing within the IB learner profile, the alignment between assessment instruments and student writing, and factors that create dissonance between curricular intentions and student performance. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through institutional documents, interviews, observations, and student artifacts. Findings show that critical writing is understood as an inquiry-based practice fostered through cognitive and affective engagement, with students demonstrating greater criticality when addressing meaningful and authentic topics. However, writing often remains descriptive due to limited development of higher-order thinking skills. Assessment practices show only partial alignment with curricular goals, emphasizing linguistic accuracy over critical reasoning. Additional tensions stem from L2 constraints, where grammar receives more attention than cognitive scaffolding, limiting writing as an independent competence. Overall, critical writing development is shaped by unresolved tensions among pedagogical, linguistic, cognitive, affective, and institutional factors.eng
