| spa |
| dc.description.abstractenglish | This master's thesis evaluated the effect of embedding metacognitive scaffolding within a virtual learning environment on medicinal plants, on the self-regulation and learning achievement of adults aged 20 to 42 in the municipality of Cota, Cundinamarca, Colombia. A quasi-experimental design with two non equivalent independent groups was used with a sample of 50 participants distributed into a group with active metacognitive scaffolding (n = 25) and a group without such scaffolding (n = 25) who completed a 15-module virtual environment named COTA Plantas Medicinales. The dependent variables learning achievement, cognitive skills, critical thinking, metacognitive self-regulation and motivated learning strategies (MSLQ) were measured at pretest and posttest and analyzed through a Multivariate Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA) using each variable's pretest score as a covariate. Results showed a strong and statistically significant overall effect of metacognitive scaffolding on the set of dependent variables (Pillai's trace = 0.675; F = 21.243; p = 0.000; partial η² = 0.675). When disaggregated by variable the scaffolded group significantly outperformed the non-scaffolded group in learning achievement, cognitive skills, metacognitive self-regulation, and MSLQ with moderate to large effect sizes; critical thinking was the exception, as its difference did not hold after the Bonferroni correction. It is concluded that the metacognitive scaffolding embedded in the virtual environment constitutes an effective pedagogical strategy for strengthening self-regulation and learning achievement around traditional knowledge, although its effect on critical thinking appears to require a longer exposure time or scaffolding strategies more specifically directed at that dimension. | eng |
